OSG wins Italian GP as thunder rolls in!

General News 06 July 2009 - The pursuit of the P1 World Championship is back on track for OSG Racing after another impressive winning performance by the Italian outfit to claim the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea and move up to second place in the world standings.

Thunderstorms had delayed the race start and as pilots, Giovanni Carpitella and Giancarlo Cangiano, the 2006 Evolution Class World Champions, went about their business, menacing dark skies, thunder and lightening loomed threateningly.

Fortunately, despite the skies opening up in the final stages, the race would run its full course.

Yesterday, the Cigarette of Luca Fendi and Matteo Nicolini was dominant before spinning out.

Today SNAV OSG, buoyed by its Sprint win, ran perfectly throughout, taking the lead on the first lap and extending it, lap by lap.

Behind them, Cigarette Smash Poker, Metamarine and Furnibo were vying for second spot until the Cigarette was forced to retire on lap 3.

The battle for second would continue for the next five laps before the Belgium team, Furnibo, surged ahead. Behind them it was a race of attrition, only three boats finishing in poor light and with thunder rolling across the sea.

Silverline crossed the line in third.

Prior to the weekend, it had been all-change in the cockpit of SNAV OSG, the Mercury-powered Outerlimits powerboat.

Team owner, Giancarlo Cangiano returning to the throttles after the birth of his first child and official driver, Hannes Bohinc, electing to step down to allow reserve driver, Giovanni Carpitella, to compete at his home GP.

It was a sweet double-victory in home waters for the Italian pairing and the next event, the Scandinavian Grand Prix, cannot come soon enough for the team.

Hannes Bohinc, the 2005 P1 World Championship will return to the cockpit in Gothenburg, Sweden, over the weekend of 8/9 August, as the season moves past the half-way stage.

Hannes Bohinc, Team Driver, OSG Racing:

“It was an excellent weekend for the team and today’s performance was faultless. The boat and engine combination was back to its best and the championship remains in our sights. Three Grand Prix events and two wins - well done to everyone associated with OSG Racing.”
