High drama as Bohinc and Cangiano win GP!

General News 10 August 2009 - In a race temporarily stopped on lap 10 after a dramatic spin out of by one of the front runners, Hannes Bohinc and Giancarlo Cangiano secured a third Grand Prix win of the season for OSG Racing at the Powerboat P1 Scandinavian Grand Prix.

They followed yesterdays win with second place in today’s 74 nautical mile endurance event and moved a step closer to the World Championship title with just two rounds remaining.

After a thrilling three-boat battle for the lead, Furnibo,of the Belgian 2B1 Racing team led into the first turn, closely followed by the US entry, Lucas Oil Outerlimits and SNAV OSG.

As the laps unfolded and SNAV OSG battled to stay in contention, the Belgians looked good value for a win, racing at speeds in excess of 114 mph when the incident occurred.

As the Outerlimits powerboat of Joe Sgro and Nigel Hook closed on the race leaders, the boat hit wash whilst turning, flipped onto its roof and started to sink.

The race was immediately stopped whilst the pilots were rescued, both pilots thankfully suffering no more than shock and bruising.

Both were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and the boat was towed away from the course in preparation for a restart.

The restart saw the Mercury-powered Fountain of the Belgians, Frank Hemelaer and Pierre Colpin, continue where it had left off, leading the way with SNAV OSG now in second place and Cigarette Smash Poker in third.

Despite pushing hard and closing the gap to less than 20 seconds, Bohinc and Cangiano were unable to make further in roads, settling for second place on the day and another well-deserved Grand Prix title.

The teams now head to Sicily for the final two rounds of the season, taking place over the weekend of 12/13 September.

Hannes Bohinc, Team Driver, OSG Racing:

“The hard work was done yesterday so today we knew exactly what had to be done to win the Grand Prix and improve our championship position. In that respect it was mission accomplished. It is unsettling when you see competitors crash out and our only thoughts were for the safety of the pilots. They are safe, we can breath easily again and start to plan for our final event in Sicily.”

Giancarlo Cangiano, Team owner and throttleman, OSG Racing:

“Another great weekend, well done to all the team for their hard work. We had some problems in the cockpit with our intercom; it made our communication interesting to say the least. We are both laughing about it. Hannes and myself are both strong characters and we make a good team.”
